In which the knights join the Purple Dragons.

Synopsis

Jorstag Carmog and the foreigner make a detour to the capital while the rest continue to the de Mornay estate. They follow the road to the northeast for a several days. The area has been ravaged by the war against the demon dragon.

Sir Markvart discover several slain orks in a ditch and signs of a struggle. The orks appear to have been killed by blunt weapons, perhaps a peasant mob. In the vicinity, the heroes find a roup of angry peasant who they stop from lyching a suspected witch. They claim to have seen him near a ork cave. The orks have apparently killed a shepherd lad and his sheep. When questioned about their lord, they say that "they pay their taxes but see no justice".

A fearsome manticore.

The prisoner, a mage known as Asmund Prospery claims to represent a family of traders from Arabel. He "hired" the orks as guards rather than being robbed by them. The heroes take their prisoner to Baron Delaney's castle. The baron is known as a fearsome fighter who have fought in every major engagement the last 20 years. The knight and their companions are given quarters in the keep and are invited to dine with their host, This grizzled, dedicated warrior sees little point in worrying about farmers when military matters are more important. The Baron hears the case of the mage and decides to let the mage serve in the castle as court mage until midwinter as punishment. The Baron discusses the deployment of his troops with the knights, and argues that they could be used to reinforce the army. He gives the group a message to take to the regent.

When the knights leave, the captain of the guard warns them that a large flying creature has been seen in the area the last days. As they leave the castle, they think about their host. Perhaps they can find a suitable wife for him...

Later in the day, the group is attacked by a fearsome manticore! It is slain by the combined might of the knights and their companions. Florian takes the spines from the manticore's tail; perhaps they will make good arrowheads.

The next day, the knights arrive at the army. It is bustling with activity, and they are directed to the General's tent once they have stated their business. They deliver the letter from Baron Delaney and are instructed to see the quartermaster who will assign them a tent. Once they have made themselves presentable, they perform the sad task of delivering the fallen knight's armor to Baroness de Mornay. She recognizes it as her son's and thanks the knights for their service to the family. The Baroness then asks them to leave so that she can mourn the death of her son in solitude.

The next day, the knights and their companions are called to the staff tent and inducted into the ranks of the Purple Dragons without much ceremony. Whether this great honor will be extended to the foreigner Menkalinan remains to be seen. They are given some useful items and instructions to patrol the countryside.
