In this chapter the heroes look through the barn in search of the bear's master.

The Barn

To get out of the cellar we had to go through the kitchen again and as the last time I almost threw up and was completely distracted when Velicia thought that someone was coming from the barn. Honeypot helped me get some deep breaths of clean air while the rain flooded down my back. I could hardly see 30 feet in front of me, but I felt better. I moved out to the side and kept low to avoid being noticed. Velicia who had circled out to the other side, by the well, said she was attacked by three half-ogres that seemed to be a little drunk. I sneaked up behind them and attacked. We all fought near the well, tricking some of them to slip into the well on the watery grass. The well was full and they got out quite easily, but couldn't fight while there. Eventually they were all killed.

Kaven Windstrike.
Vale Temros.

We headed over to the barn. Peeking in through the double doors we noted a wall halfway through with another set of big double doors. There were a big still and two catwalks that lined the walls. Gloriana, Honeypot and I climbed one of them. It ended in another door through the wall. Velicia used her magical hand to open the big doors on the ground level and Gloriana did the same with the one in front of us. Everybody waited, standing back, so I alone sneaked up to the door and peeked in. I saw a cage at the end of the catwalk where three unconscious men were chained. I also noted that there were two huge spiders and hundreds of small spiders hiding below. Velicia walked up to the double doors preparing to help out if we got in trouble as I sneaked up to the cage. I picked the lock as Honeypot caught up. We entered the cage and as I picked the locks on the manacles of the nearest Honeypot helped two of them to regain consciousness. The spiders below started stirring. We were noticed, but they didn't attack. Yet. Honeypot and I looked at each others.
"Do you need help picking the lock?" she asked me.
"No. Start on the next one. We got to be quick." I answered.
We both picked the remaining locks and one of the men picked up the third and carried him out and we all left. Walking behind them I looked at the young blond one and thought that he was really good looking.
"I prefer the dark one." Honeypot answered in my head.
Again I had forgotten about the telepathy and felt the heat om my cheeks from blushing.

As soon as the doors were well closed behind us and I had checked that no spiders had followed us out I turned to the rangers. Honeypot helped the last one of the regain consciousness. He opened his eyes and I looked deeply into his beautiful bright steel blue ones. The others found out that Fort Rannick had fallen to hordes of ogres as I helped Kaven Windstrike, as he was called, to sit up. We decided that we should return to Turtleback Ferry to heal and regain strength. Dorothea and Gloriana started planning on how to burn the house down and Velicia objected. I thought that that horrible house really should burn, especially the kitchen. I almost felt sick just thinking of it, but when Kaven asked who I was my thoughts returned to nicer things.
"I'm Nell." I said trying to come up with anything more to say.
"You wait here while I bring the horses." I said breaking the uncomfortable silence and got up but kept my eyes on the now smiling young ranger.

Jakardros Sovark.

Returning with the horses I met Dorothea and Gloriana half dragging, half carrying the still towards the house. I, Shalelu, the bear and the horses entered the barn shaking the rain out of our clothes or fur. The older ranger called Jakardros Sovark stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Shalelu and she obviously knew him too. They didn't seem to like each other and she turned on her heel and marched back out into the rain. Honeypot followed her.
"It's all my fault. It's all my faul." Jakardros said over and over.
Tears fell from his eyes. It felt very strange looking at a tough soldier crying. I approached and tried to console him. I was joined by Kaven and Vale Temros as the dark man was called.

Shalelu and Honeypot soon returned and Velicia joined them talking. I was just adjusting my packs on Creampuff as Dorothea and Gloriana returned and said
"Let's go now."
"Aren't you ready yet?"
We finished up and I helped Kaven up on Creampuff.

As we left Dorothea set fire to the barn too. I thought that that might be a little unnecessary. It was in the house they had all the disgusting body parts. We went back the same way we came. I was walking next to Creampuff helping Kaven to sit straight in the saddle. I think he didn't need the help, but he didn't seem to mind my hand on his hip.
