Misc Linux stuff:

LAN

I currently use Red Hat 8, but I will probably have to update soon.

Distribution

I want a Red Hat derived distrubution with firewire support. Firewire is not required on the webserver, only the backup/media box.

RHEL / CentOS

I would use CentOS, but as far as I know there is still no firewire support. Linkage for fire support in CentOS.

Administration

Webmin

I like know how thing work under the hood, and I do a fair bit of tinkering ar work. For my home network, I want to keep things as simple as possible. I've decided to give Webmin a try. I need to be abke to configure:

  • Firewall
  • Apache
  • Postfix
  • MySQL
  • Samba
  • User/groups/etc

Pretty standard stuff, in other words. See this HOWTO for for some notes.

Yum

Yum for package upgrades. See this link for instruction on how to set up a repo. This should be useful at work and at home.

Apt

I still use apt at work update servers. That is mostly because I have an apt repository on a secure netork, and because yum doesn't work through the authenticated proxy.

Misc

Firewall

I'm currently trying out Firestarter which is has nice and simple GUI. Another option might be Proxmox, also nown as Proxwall.

GRUB

  • Boot from USB memory or CD using GRUB.

Printing

  • I've switched to CUPS at work for my printing need. This has worked great!

Utilities

Training

I've taken the RHCT course at at Global Knowledge in Stockholm. Very good course! Here are some Urban/Linux notes.

Hardware

Dell M60

I use a Urban/Linux on Dell M60 at work. It's curently being repaired. Sigh...
