She was born to the Meravanchi-family, a quite rich and influential family in Sasserine. As long as anybody could remember the firstborn had always been a boy, who would grow up as the new head of the family. When the firstborn was a girl the family decided to keep her a secret from society. Her little brother, Avner, was born less than a year later and was the officially firstborn of the family. Fiorella was kept "hidden" in a family estate in the country side during her early years.
When she grew up she was extremely inquisitive. Her nanny soon grew tired of her nagging. Why is the sky blue? Why is it red when the sun sets? and so on. The solution was a tutor who gave her lessons at the country estate. An uncle, who was a wizard and the black sheep of the family on her mothers side, was given a refuge from supercilious relatives got the position. He had an endless patience with the inquisitive little girl, even though she disturbed him during his studies. He answered her questions out of his perspective. She soon had an understanding of the world that was completely based on a wizards views and studied the ways of a wizard. When she was old enough she was sent off to the academy, but as the family still wanted the secret kept she entered under the pseudonym of "Lady Red", due to her red hair.
She woke up sweating. It was just the latest in a long row of nightmares. The difference this time was that she remembered. She remembered what had happened in the dream. Or was it a dream? It seamed so real. There was a man, whom she instinctively knew was a wizard. He was negotiating with a beautiful dark-eyed woman. Red vaguely recognized them both but could not place them. They talked about magical power, knowledge and descendants.
That's where! She recognized the man. She had studied the paintings of the family ancestors as a small child. The older ones that didn't fit into the city house was moved to the country estate where Red had lived. Suddenly she realized what the dream was all about. One of her ancestors had made a pact with a powerful woman, promising his family's first born daughters to the her. Her. She was no ordinary spellcaster. She was the Dark-Eyed Lady, the Ruby Sorceress or as she was more commonly known as, Wee-Jas.
With horror she realize that it's not due to some unusual quirk that her family always got a boy as the firstborn, as it had been for generations. It seamed as if the man intended that the daughters would be priestesses to the womans honor, but that's not the way the woman had interpreted it. Red wondered if she had had an elder sister, that had been lost to the woman, or if she was the one promised to her. Had the family curse stopped? If she was the one, then why was she still alive?
She had no answers...
