Talk:The Lion and the Eagle
Rules
Encumbrance
I'm thinking about ways to simplify encumbrance. The easiest way to do this is probably to add a Strength requirement for armor. Each missing die type imposes a -1 modifer to Strength and Agility based trait rolls. This works like the regular encumbrance penalty.
Armor | Str |
---|---|
Buff coat | d6 |
Chain hauberk | d8 |
Breastplate | d8 |
Cuirassier armor (*) | d10 |
* Full plate and cuirassier armor makes the character slow, and imposes a -1 penalty to Pace when on foot. A horse wearing plate barding also suffers -1 penalty to Pace.
Melee weapons in Savage Worlds weigh quite a bit, but this can be ignored as long as characters do not carry too many weapons.
Unit
The heroes will be soldier in Colonel Creutz's regiment of horse. The Colonel is formerly of Åke Tott's regiment, and has been given command of one of the regiments raised by Tott in Germany. It consists of a small cadre of Finns and Swedes, while the bulk of the troopers are German mercenaries.
While the Creutz family is real, the Colonel and his regiment are fictional. Several regiments were raised by Tott in Germany. They were part of the main Swedish army and rode under his skull banner[1]. The regiment can appear where the story rather than historical accuracy demands, much like the South Essex regiment in the Sharpe novels.
Campaigns
There are several possible campaign types. Some are described below.
Dogs of War
This is the default campaign model. Most, if not all of the characters are soldiers or mercenaries in the service of Gustavus Adolphus. They will likely be members of a cavalry unit since it allows the characters a great deal of mobility, and also makes them a good choice for courier and reconnaissance missions. Many scenarios will start with "You are on patrol when...". One of the characters should be a sergeant or officer with the Rank edge, and be the nominal leader of the group. There will be plenty of fighting, but missions from the other campaign models can easily be played for variety.
Chosen Men
The characters are members of Krak's Company, an elite (historical) unit of mounted foresters equipped with wheellock or snaphaunce rifles. This is very much like the adventures of Richard Sharpe and the Chosen Men, but set in the Thirty Year's War.
On His Majesty's Secret Service
The characters are a diverse lot with special skills who have been recruited by Axel Oxenstierna, the Chancellor of Sweden, to perform missions vital to the war. A wide variety of characters, including women, are suitable for this campaign model.
The Hex Files
The characters roam the German countryside, fighting the dark powers in the form of witches, werewolves and other monsters from European folklore. One of the characters should be a priest or doctor with an interest in the supernatural, but he does not have to be the leader or the group. This campaign model is heavily influenced by Rippers and the Horror Wars.

Notes on Swedish
Some of the source material is written in Swedish. A few notes in the language of honor and heroes (as poet laureate Esias Tegnér described Swedish) are inevitable. Text in Swedish will be indicated with a Swedish flag.
Pamp: (pl.-ar), m. 1) stort svärd, lång värja; 2) knekt, soldat; 3) knekt eller högt kort i spel "Stor-pampen, äkta pampen"; 4) Stor karl. Allm. D. d. pamper, m. tjock, fet karl, som är långsam i sin gång; mht. pampa, stort svärd.
Ordet "pamp" verkar alltså avse svärd i allmänhet.
