The Purple Dragon

This is a support page for the Purple Dragon campaign. Players in the campaign can take the Animal Companion feat. This gives them an animal companion (typically a light or heavy warhorse) similar to druid's animal companion. The table for a druid's compainion is used at full character level, the benefits listed in the 'special' column do not apply.

Stat blocks for standard horses can be found in the SRD. The table below lists mounts for current levels in the Purple Dragon campaign.

Destrier

The destrier is the most well-known war horse of the medieval era. It carried knights in battles, tournaments, and jousts. It was described by contemporary sources as the Great Horse, due to its size and reputation. In game terms, it is an improved heavy warhorse.

These animals are similar to heavy horses but are trained and bred for strength and aggression. A destrier can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds on a Ride check (DC 10).

Tricks

These mounts are trained for combat riding as listed in the Handle Animal skill description. The mount knows the tricks attack, come, defend, down, guard, and heel. In addition, the mount knows a number of extra tricks as listed above.

Ability improvements

Ability improvement for 8 HD has been applied to Constitution in order to increase survivabilty. The Armor Focus feat gives +2 AC with the chosen armor type. This is used for Jorstag's and Markvart's mounts in the Purple Dragon campaign, but other ability improvements and feat selections are possible.

Carrying Capacity

The light load is listed in the table above. Medium load is x2 this value and heavy load x3. The mount can drag x15 this amount.
