In this chapter the heroes race through the streets of Magnimar to an old tower in the Shadow district.
The Old Clocktower
Some noise woke me up. It sounded like a crowd of people cheering. I looked out the window but the back alley was empty. I went over to the others and found them on a balcony. I hid inside while the others talked to the people outside. They had gathered there because they had heard that we had stopped the cult behind the murders. Honeypot wanted to start a big party, but we had important things to do. After a lot of convincing she at last realized that none of us would stay as we would make sure that the whole of the evil cult had been stopped. As we got ready to leave Honeypot cast the telepathy ritual so we could talk to each others even if we got separated. I left through the back door and went unnoticed to the stable and got Creampuff. Nathaniel rode from the crowd on Shadowmist. We all gathered and continued towards Ironbriar's townhouse as we guessed that the birds would fly there. At the house there were servants working. Apparently the rumor about our deeds and his part in the cult hadn't spread to everyone. We stopped a little further away and Honeypot released her big black raven. It took to the sky and circled some before setting a course away from the house. We all followed in different ways. I and Nathaniel rode and the others tried to follow on foot. It turned out that it flew towards the old bridge but flew around it, never above it, and descended. I stood up in the saddle to see it better and we all set our course for the slope down to the shadow district at the base of and below the bridge. There were more crow birds there and we realized we might loose it in the shade below the bridge. Honeypot and Velicia caught up with us by taking a shortcut across the bridge and now Honeypot called the raven back to her and Velicia cast a light spell on the raven to tag it. We rode into the dark shadow of the bridge where most buildings hardly get any sun. As the streets narrowed it would become harder to ride so I left Creampuff with Orik who waited behind while we continued. I was surprised to see a group of city guards in this part of town. I hid and looked closer. They seemed to be more of the wood-like shape-changers we met at the Foxglove townhouse earlier. Nathaniel took off and the guards followed him, but he told us that he soon lost them in the maze of streets that were the shadow district.
The raven headed for an old tower that was hardly any more than a ruin. Velicia ended the spell on the raven to not reveal it was followed. The tower was a 90 feet tall, leaning, decrepit stone tower with a clock, forever at 3 o'clock. At the top there was a huge leaning angel. The bridge itself was many times older than the tower but mostly in a better condition. I sneaked up to get a good look at the tower and kept watch trying to see if there was anyone in there. I saw something looking like a ganger or two moving around inside. Honeypot asked around on the streets and heard a rumor of some big scarecrow living in the tower taking children. I was soon joined by Nathaniel, Velicia and Honeypot and we went up to the entrance.
Nathaniel was still mounted on his big, black horse. The others stormed in while I hid outside. Noticing some creatures hiding in the dark corners of the big room I threw the new dagger at one of them. It was one of the wood-like creatures. I hit it good, but it survived the wound. I sneaked out and hid to continue the same tactic, but the two I had noticed followed me out. They didn't get any good attacks but flanked me. I slipped away and went inside to throw the dagger at the huge awful scarecrow. I hit it, and continued on into a side room to hide. I heard how Honeypot threw the huge monster to the floor and another smaller one fell too. One of the two wood-like creatures entered the room I was in and I stabbed it with my other dagger. It went deep but using my off hand the attack wasn't as precise. I took a slight wound as it attacked me. I tried to retaliate by jumping over it and stabbing it but missed. At least I passed it and continued on into another side room. The wood-man followed but Nathaniel engaged it and made it retreat out into the big room. I threw my dagger but missed. My next attack killed it and the scarecrows had been destroyed too. The side rooms had just junk in them, except for one that was icky so I didn't go there.
