Not only corrupt corporations dump their waste into swamps and marshes...turns out some unscrupulous geneticists do as well. Having created some freakish embryo with absorbant genetic code they didn't know what to do with, they decided to dump it along with dead and failed experiments into the nearby quagmire already filled with chemical barrels of various content. Turns out it didn't die after all.
