Masquerade

The Masquerade is one of the longest running conspiracies in the world today. After the burnings and witch-hunts of the late middle ages, vampires hide from humanity behind a mask of normalcy and deception.

A few of the basic tenets are:

• Do not let humans know about the existence of vampires. If that happens and memory modification is impractical, both the humans involved and the offending vampire are killed.
• Spread disinformation, so that those that discover vampires use ineffective means of detecting and fighting them. Make the very concept of vampires seem quaint and old-fashioned.
• Limit the creation of new vampires to what the herd can safely sustain. This is the part of the masquerade that causes the most conflict among vampires—who gets to decide?

The modern-day enforcement of the masquerade is mostly handled by the Camarilla.
