Horrific wealth
Every character has a Wealth bonus that reflects his or her buying power—a composite of income, credit rating, and savings. A character’s Wealth bonus serves as the basis of the character’s Wealth check, which is used to purchase equipment and services for the character.
Wealth Bonus
Wealth Bonus | Financial Condition |
---|---|
+0 | Impoverished or in debt |
+1 to +4 | Struggling |
+5 to +10 | Middle class |
+11 to +15 | Affluent |
+16 to +20 | Wealthy |
+21 to +30 | Rich |
+31 or higher | Very rich |
To determine a character’s starting Wealth bonus, roll 2d6 and add the wealth bonus for the character’s starting occupation, plus (if appropriate) the bonus from the Windfall feat.
Over the course of play, the hero’s Wealth bonus will decrease as the hero purchases expensive items and increase as the hero gains levels.
A character’s Wealth bonus can never fall below +0, and there is no limit to how high the Wealth bonus can climb.
Since Wealth is an abstract concept, it’s sometimes difficult to determine how financially well off a character is. To get a general sense of how financially solvent a character is at any given time, check the table to the right.
Purchasing Stuff
As you play, your Wealth will rise and fall as you buy things, gain more levels, and as your character finds or is paid Wealth Awards.
Wealth Difference | Wealth Modifier |
---|---|
0 | 0 |
1-3 | +/-1 |
4-6 | +/-2 |
7-9 | +/-4 |
10-12 | +/-6 |
13-15 | +/-8 |
16+ | +10 |
There are no Wealth checks. Your character can either afford something or he can’t. If an item is equal to or less than your character’s Wealth, you can buy as many of them as you want. It’s a common item for your Wealth level. Similarly, selling an item of equal to or lower than your Wealth level will never provide a bonus to your Wealth no matter how many you sell.
If you buy an item with a cost higher than your Wealth, your Wealth will be permanently reduced (barring increases as described above). How large a reduction will depend on the difference between your Wealth and the cost of the item.
If you sell an object or are given a Wealth Award with a value higher than your Wealth rating, your Wealth will increase. The increase depends on the difference between your Wealth and the cost of the item.
You cannot buy an item with a cost of 13 or more than your current Wealth unless you have the Deep Pockets feat. Even then, you cannot buy an item with a cost of 16 or more than your current Wealth.
