In this chapter the heroes rescue a bear and fight its hunters.

Half-ogres

We got going in the hope of getting to Fort Rannick before dark. A rain started falling and I put on my waxed leather hood. We continued along the river to the bridge, which was still standing and was very old, made completely of black stone with beautiful statues. After crossing the river, we followed in on the other side, next to a big forest. Soon after I heard something from the woods that sounded cute. Velicia thought it sounded like some wounded animal. We were both kind of right.

We went into the woods to investigate and found a bear stuck in a trap. It tried to get away from us, but the trap was anchored to the ground by a chain. Honeypot and Velicia tried to calm the bear as I worked the trap. Soon the bear was freed. We heard commotion further into the woods. It was dogs barking and running through the woods. We retreated back to the road and the others, but I hid in the edge of the woods.

Several dogs charged out of the woods some fifty feet ahead of us closing quickly. Honeypot used her glitter magic blinding a few of them. I threw my dagger at a dog, wounding it severely. I retreated back into the woods and hid. Shalelu shot an arrow straight into a dog wounding it and slowing it down. The charging dogs reached us biting savagely before anything more could be done.

Their minders appeared from woods further ahead. It was three really ugly half-ogres that followed the the dogs. They were horribly deformed, probably from birth. Honeypot used magic that thundered while I threw my dagger once again into a dog, killing it and hid even deeper into the dense forest. I could still see some of the battle raging outside. A javelin struck Shalelu just before one of the smaller half-ogres charged her. Dorotheas magic struck home on several of the enemies and Gloriana used her magic too. One of the dogs tried to slip between Gloriana and Honeypot but they struck it down. I threw my dagger again killing the half-ogre attacking Shalelu. Glorianas magic hurt one of the dogs and she moved around in the fight as the wind. Honeypot felled the half-ogre leader, but didn't kill him. Velicia hit the last half-ogre, setting it up for me to move in behind it and kill it.

Honeypot interrogated the half-ogre still alive, but I walked over to Creampuff to calm him down after the fighting. I checked the luggage too, making sure that all the food was safe. It turned out that one of the bags with pies wasn't properly closed and it would be easier to close if there was a pie less in it, so I solved the problem. While eating I noted that something upset Shalelu. I'm not sure what, but when Honeypot turned the half-ogre into a rabbit I got something else to think about. Like how I could ever again enjoy eating rabbit when I couldn't be sure I wasn't really eating a mutated half-ogre. Gloriana answered that by killing the rabbit with her magic.
