Imperial Language

Languages willplay some role in this campaign.

All characters begin the game with one free language - almost always Common. Furhter languages must be purchased. In the cosmopolitan empire, it is no god-given fact that everyone speaks their own racial language. Nor does everyone speak draconic - that is a language for nobles and for the imperial bureocracy.

Language use is governed by the various social skills. The skill most relevant to communicating without a language is Seduction.

Learning a language also gives some knowledge about the customs and culture the language represent, opening up new areas of the social skills.

Language ability can be faked by many supernatural means - like the Sorcery schticks Divination or Influence, or with TranslatorSpellware. Such a translation does not give the appropriate cultural knowledge, however, and may often increase the difficulty of social interaction tasks, making social skills default to Charisma.

The DS:ImperialLanguage has a list of the languages of the imperium, as well as an earth language to give an idea of what it might sound like and how different languages are related to each other. For more on the different clutures, see DragonRaces.
