Hard Science-Fiction Setting

Solar Alchemy meant building hardware into the low corona and using obscene heat, light, and magnetic fields to make things you could not make anywhere else. Antimatter was one target — not the only one. Arrays rode perihelion ellipses, opened for minutes to hours, then shuttered and spiraled out. The value was extreme flux at scale: gamma, UV, particles, and power.

Most Solar Alchemy died with Daedalus. What limps on: covert isotope pulls, small-lot irradiated coils, and rare sun-diver micro-shots under escort. Everything else is salvage, rumor, or a court case waiting to happen. MetaPhase Alchemy survives in downsized yards far from the Sun; Solar Alchemy made it cheaper, larger, and tougher — and may again, if anyone dares to rebuild.

Pair-Production Skims (antimatter)

Gamma caustics plus magnetic catcher rings scraped positrons and antiprotons from flare belts and trapped zones. Output fed Penning-trap cassettes or just-in-time pearlizers. Pre-Fall targets were milligram-class per year across the whole network; any single line made micrograms. Operations lived and died on shutters, metrology, and quench drills. Post-Fall: only fragmentary rigs and war stories.

Solar-Wind Isotope Harvest

Electrostatic and magnetic scoops at perihelion drank raw solar wind — mostly H/He with a trace of heavies. The win was isotopic separation at scale: ³He, ²H, clean ²⁸Si, rare Ne/Ar mixes for fusion R&D, standards, and medicine. Product left as cryogenic bottles on sun-diver tugs. Without the pre-Fall grids, this is marginal except for covert specialty lots.

Radioisotope Brewing

Flare neutrons and high-energy secondaries let you spallate custom isotopes (⁷Be, ¹⁰Be, ²⁶Al, niche Mo/Tc lines). Coronal lines also pre-activated test coupons for reactor materials and dosimetry sources. Handling was the whole game: timed shutters, hot labs on gimbals, and fast return cadence. Most gear burned or was abandoned.

Irradiation-Hardened Materials

Deliberate bombardment seeded pinning centers in superconductors, toughened ceramics, and pre-aged alloys for radiation duty. “Sun-baked” coils, mirrors, and window stacks were prized in Jovian service — lighter, longer-lived, and measurably straighter under load. Surviving lots trade at absurd premiums; counterfeits are common.

MetaPhase Alchemy (formal: Synthetic-Constant Foundry)

Extreme-state fabrication that emulates altered constants with fields and templated lattices, then locks metastable and topological phases by ultrafast quench. No new physics — just brutal presses, pulsed megatesla magnets, femtosecond lasers, and clever stacking. Outputs: diamond/carbyne films, lonsdaleite coatings, robust superconductors with dense pinning, high-index/meta-optics, radiation-hard ceramics. Perihelion “Sunforge” runs bolted Solar Alchemy steps onto the flow — irradiation to seed defects, mirror curing at UV flux, shock and quench at power you cannot rent anywhere else. Limits: huge, hot, audited; products can age back; batches vary. Status: flagship lines died with Dedalus; a few covert yards and Jovian shops still run small lots.

Extreme Solar Furnaces

Phased mega-mirror fields did kiln jobs yards could not: kilometer-scale graphene, cured meta-optics and sails, bulk diamond films, lonsdaleite flash-coats, and mass sterilization for bio-labs. Recipe was exposure, pulse, and quench with metrology running full-time. Many mirrors are now lethal debris.

Sun-Diver Logistics (Oberth yards)

Use mass drivers at perihelion to buy Δv cheap. Pellet streams, fuel cans, and probes were flung onto precise interplanetary tracks using free power and the Sun’s gravity well. It worked — until Fall. Today most lanes are booby-trapped by shards and lost cans; a few micro-shots still run under military escort.

Beamed Power & Light Sails

Tight, phased mirror fields pushed sail probes and dripped power to inner-system relays. It ended badly — storms turned beams into weapons and guidance into guesswork. Where tolerated now, beams run as short, chartered lanes with shutters, no-go cones, and independent metrology. Politically toxic elsewhere.

Muon/Secondary Factories (on-site only)

Flares make showers. Arrays tapped muon flux and other secondaries for catalysis experiments, exotic spectroscopy, and short-lived materials studies. Nothing you can ship; everything you can learn. Niche but real.

Solar-Wind Volatiles to Prop

Hydrogen and helium capture at perihelion, then crack, bottle, and ship high-purity propellants for near-Sun ops. Never beat outer-system ice per kilogram, but unbeatable for local work when every kilogram of contamination meant melted optics.

Field-Shaping Experiments

Magnetohydrodynamic “tuning” of loops and flux ropes to calm windows, steer particle drifts, and protect work zones. Useful — and exactly the sort of hubris blamed for the Dedalus cascade. Banned or heavily chartered now; enforcement is mostly port denial.

Meta-Optics & Shade Fabrication

Cure thin-film mirrors and climate shades in bulk under raw UV. These fed Earth’s climate recovery and the largest telescopes. After the Fall, fragments haunt eccentric orbits; salvage is dangerous and lucrative.

Data & Tomography

Flares lit the inner system like an X-ray. Solar-side arrays ran materials and structure tomography on passing payloads and even small asteroids: shock fronts, voids, and weld flaws popped out. It was niche — and priceless for quality control — until the arrays died.
