In D20 version 3.5, participating characters are awarded experience depending on their individual level, not average party level. Thus, characters of lower levels receive more experience points than their higher-level compatriots. This has some interesting implications:

  • Characters that suffer level loss (level drain, raise dead) will eventually catch up.
  • Experience points spent on Spellware and item creation will also be regained.
  • Dragonstar uses ECL adjustments of +1..+3 for high-tech gear. This means that even if a party consists only of eighth-level characters, the effective character level can range from 8 (unarmed monk) to 11 (paladin with power armor and assault blaster).

In the Dark Star campaign we have a campain experience level as listed in the Episode Guide. This reduces the amount of bookkeeping required and has met with general approval from our players.

The rule below allows characters to regain levels when dying, but they still have to pay for Spellware, while avoiding the bookkeeping nightmare of equipment related mission variable effective character levels.

Rules

  • Character with lost levels count as their full character level for experience purposes.
  • One lost level is regained at the end of every third session.
