This is a work in progress.

The pet mage focuses on and develops the familiar ability. Most are sorcerers or wizards with familiar as a class ability, but anyone who has a familiar can join the class. Many pet mages elect to take the Improved Familiar feat, but not all; some prefer to have a regular familiar.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the pet mage prestige class.

Hit Die: d4

Class Skills:

Concentration (Con), Knowledge (all skills, taken individually) (Int), Profession (Wis), and Spellcraft (Int).

Skill points at each level: 2 + Int modifier.

Weapon and armor proficiency: The pet mage gains no proficiency in weapons or armor.

Spellcasting

A pet mage continues training in magic as well as her new class abilities. Thus, when a new pet mage level is gained, the character gains new spells per day as if she had also gained a level in a spellcasting class she belonged to before she added the prestige class. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (improved chance of controlling or rebuking undead, metamagic or item creation feats, and so on). This essentially means that she adds the level of pet mage to the level of some other spellcasting class the character has, then determines spells per day, spells known, and caster level accordingly.

If a character had more than one spellcasting class before she became a pet mage, she must decide to which class she adds each level of pet mage for purposes of determining spells per day when she adds the new level.

Familiar Bonding

A pet mage only has to wait six days to bond a new familiar after the dismissal or death of an earlier one.

Familiar Progression

The abilities of the familiar is always based on your character level, not your class level. If you have multiclassed or otherwise missed levels from your familiar ability, those levels are regained.

Familiar Skills

The familiar gains a bonus of two skill points per level. This is based on your character level, and includes the three virtual levels previous to level 1; it is awarded retroactively. Its class skills include yours, as well as any skill normally known to a creatures of its type. This is in addition to inheriting all your skill ranks, as a normal familiar does.

Hide on Person

At second level and higher, when the familiar occupies your space, it has full cover.

Speech

Your familiar can speak all languages you can speak. Its conversational ability is still limited by attributes and skills; most familiars have very limited Charisma.

Familiar Special Ability

At levels 2 and 5, you get to select one of the special abilities from this list.

Additional Familiar (ex) You can have multiple familiars. Each time you pick this ability, you gain one additional familiar. All feats and class abilities applicable to your first familiar also applies to any later familiars. This ability can be chosen more than once.

Ego Familiar (su) Whenever you or your familiar is subject to a mind-affecting power, you may both make Will saving throws. Unless both saving throws fail, neither of you is affected. If both saving throws fail, the original target of the power is affected, which might be one or both of you. If you have more than one familiar, pick one to share your saving throws; the others are protected by this ability, but do not provide any protection to you.

Morphic Familiar (su) Your familiar can assume the form of any other basic familiar, as polymorph with a duration of one hour per level, three times per day. Basic familiars are those allowed without recourse to special feats; including all those in the PH and in New Familiars.

Spirit Familiar (su) The familiar can become invisible at will.

Familiar Concentration

The familiar can take over control of spells with a duration of concentration. When casting such a spell, you can opt to have the familiar concentrate on it instead of doing so yourself. The familiar must be within 30 ft. of you when the spell is cast, and can only concentrate on one spell at a time.

Improved share spell

The familiar can share spells with you at a range of up to 30 ft.

Familiar Recall (sp)

Three times per day, your familiar can teleport itself and up to five pounds of nonliving objects to your space as an immediate action.
