A molting witch casts arcane spells drawn from the witch spell list . She can cast any spell she knows without preparing it ahead of time. To learn or cast a spell, a molting witch must have a Charisma score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a molting witch's spell is 10 + the spell level + the molting witch's Charisma modifier.

Like other spellcasters, a molting witch can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. A molting witch does not use the spells per day from Table: the witch. Instead, her base daily spell allotment is given on Table: Molting Witch. In addition, she receives bonus spells per day if she has a high Charisma score (see Table: Ability Modifiers and Bonus Spells).

A molting witch's selection of spells is extremely limited. A molting witch begins play knowing four 0-level spells and two 1st-level spells of her choice. At each new molting witch level, she gains one or more new spells, as indicated on Table: Molting Witch Spells Known. (Unlike spells per day, the number of spells a molting witch knows is not affected by her Charisma score; the numbers on Table: molting witch are fixed.)

The molting witch adds the spells granted by her patron to her list of known spells. This is in addition to the spells from Table: Molting Witch Spells Known.

Unlike a normal witch, a molting witch need not prepare her spells in advance. She can cast any spell she knows at any time, assuming she has not yet used up her spells per day for that spell level.

This is a modification of the spells ability.

Hex

This functions like the witch's hex ability, except the molting witch gains a hex at level 1, level 5, and every four levels after level 5. The save to resist a molting witch's hex is equal to 10 + 1/2 the witch’s level + the witch’s Charisma modifier. All other aspects of hex and major hex abilities that are normally based on Intelligence are based on Charisma for a molting witch. The molting witch gains access to major hexes at level 13 but never gets access to grand hexes. This modifies the hex and major hex abilities, and replaces grand hex.

Molting (Sp)

A molting witch can enter a state of hibernation for 32 hours, emerging as a renewed version of herself. During this time, the molting witch is encased in a web cocoon with 10 hit points per caster level, but is otherwise helpless and only awakens if the cocoon is broken open. She does not need to eat, but still breathes normally and is subject to all effects she was under when she began molting. If awakened prematurely all benefits are lost and the molting witch is exhausted. During the molting she may change all her known spells, her hexes, and her patron. Changing patron also changes patron spells. After molting is complete, the witch comes out completely refreshed, with spells prepared, and gains the benefit of a heal spell cast at her class level.

As she advances in levels, the moult gives the witch more and more advantages. All these effects use her witch level as the caster level. At level 3, the molting witch can change her appearance to any within the norms of her age, race, and gender. She cannot imitate a specific appearance, but can assume an appearance she previously had with perfect likeness. This is an instantaneous effect-the new appearance becomes the molting witch's natural form. At level 7, the molting witch benefits from restoration upon exiting the moult. At level 11, the molting witch can change into another form of the same creature type, as reincarnate except she need not be dead and she can choose what race she becomes and that she suffers no negative levels. At level 15, the molting witch can change into another form, as shapechange, but cannot change shape each round. This change is permanent until countermanded. At level 20, the molting witch can change her alignment and age category when molting, making her effectively immortal and possibly completely immoral without suffering the consequences. This is an instantaneous effect-the new alignment and age becomes part of the molting witch's natural form. The witch can choose to forget some of her memories, which are then regained the next time she mounts. At that time she can select to forget them again. Selective memory loss can make the process of changing alignment much easier.

This replaces the witch's familiar ability and the reduced hexes ability.

New Hexes

Cocoon: Only a molting witch can take this hex. You can use the Molting ability to cocoon another creature who is either willing or helpless. This takes ten minutes of uninterrupted work. The target gets benefits as a molting witch four levels lower than you are. You decide all details on what to change, but you cannot change spells known.

Summary of Changed Class Abilities

These abilities of the original class are lost or modified in this archetype:

  • Spellcasting
  • Familiar
  • Hex
  • Major Hex
  • Grand Hex

The changes to molting witch hexes is such that it generally works with other archetypes that also modify hexes, so at the GM's option, the moult hex archetype can be combined with other archetypes that modify the hex abilities.
