Most churches are open to laity regardless of station. But all churches also have a core group of initiates, who support the church, help with charity (or whatever the church does), and generally uphold the values of the church in society.

A typical contribution for such a church initiate is cr. 20 per character level per month, though many people work off these dues in church service rather than pay. Divine spellcasters who don't have the time to devote to their religious duties must pay along with everybody else if they want the benefits.

The benefits of initiation are manifold. Besides the obvious spiritual benefits, Church Initiation gives access to miracles at the rates listed in the Player's Handbook, rather than at the usual Commercial Spell rates. Initiates who are regular attendees at a congregation or who do much work for the church can often get minor spells for free. Initiates who fall on hard times are the first to benefit from church charity, and members of the community look out for one another and often can provide contacts, information and career opportunities to members.

Some churches have secret societies, that work to promote their members and eventually the church. Such secret societies are not illegal, but may be frowned upon by the Imperial Police.
