All abilities based on class level are instead based on character level. This applies to ''what'' the ability ''does'', not to ''how'' you use it (if you can use it, how many times you can use it, or what kind of action it is to use). This increased the utility of multiclass spells, animal companions, and such.

Not affected by this are hit points, base attack bonus, skill points, and saving throw modifiers, and any ability mentioned in the "special" column of the class table with a new entry, which still work per the normal rules. Spells per day and spells known are always determined by class level, but caster level is character level.
