Clockwork Gadgets


Advances is mechanics allow clockwork devices and similar high-precision tools. Gunpowder is also of great use for gadgets.

Clockwork Cart

Gunpowder Age, Unconcealable Slick

This is a small self-propelled cart, capable of carrying ten kilos or so over flat floors and perhaps one kilo over rough ground. Variants can be constructed to traverse water or even fly very short distances. The device will travel slowly along a pre-planned and predetermined route. It is usually concealed as a barrel or other inconspicuous object. Because it moves so slowly, it is unlikely that it will be noticed. It can also traverse pipes and other areas humans can't go.

One use of the device is to carry a bomb into enemy territory. Another use could be to fetch some item in a high-security area or past bars or grilles impassable to humans.

Reprogramming a clockwork cart is as difficult as building one. The GM is encouraged to make the path of the clockwork device intriguing and exiting, with plenty of Fix-It rolls.

Clockwork Knight

Unconcealable Slick

This is a suit of medieval full armor powered by a clockwork engine. It fights furiously if blindly, and can be a real danger in a narrow passage.

The device has Body 8, Reflexes 3, Martial Arts 8 and 5 points of armor. If controlled by an operator, it uses his Fix-It to attack. It is usually armed with a two-handed sword, for 13* damage. If it's nature is known, it is vulnerable to a number of stunts, the simplest of which is simply moving behind it to it's defenseless rear side. A clockwork knight can be placed on a remote-controlled rotating dais to alleviate this problem.

It takes a Fix-It roll of 8 to identify a Clockwork Knight for what it is. On a fumble, the device is mistaken for a metallic supernatural creature.

Shoe Survival Kit

Jacket Slick, Back of Beyond adventure

This shoe contains vital medicines and medical supplies in the sole and heel. There is a small pry bar under the tongue of the shoe for removing the heel. In the heel, there is a small blade and suction bulb for treatment of snake bite. The use of the snake bite device gives a +4 to Constitution to determine whether he will survive the effects of the snake venom or how long he will last without an antivenin. Also included in the shoe are a tube of burn ointment, tweezers and a small bottle of antiseptic along with bandages. There is enough of each item for one use. Pieces of flint and steel, with tinder enough to start four individual fires, are also in the kit.
