Blacksmithing Gadgets

Climbing Pole (Shinobi-kumade)

Iron Age, Trenchcoat Slick

The Shinobi-kumade (literally,"Ninja Rake") is a collapsible bamboo pole with a claw at one end. Collapsed, it is barely 18"long, but it can telescope out to 12' and is cunningly reinforced to support the weight of a man. It may be used as a small club or long staff for Strength +2 damage. Used to aid climbing, the Shinobi-kumade makes short climbs very easy, and can aid long climbs by leapfrogging from foothold to foothold.

Combination Weapon

Iron Age, Unconcealable

This is two weapons built into one. With a one-shot action, the character can change from one use of the weapon to the other. Any two weapons with similar shape can be combined. Historical examples includes the naginata-staff and pike-longbow. One use of this is to conceal a lethal weapon inside a non lethal (and legal) one.

The GM is encouraged to give surprise bonuses when the peaceful staff suddenly turns into a deadly halberd.

Crucifix Stiletto

Iron Age, Pocket slick

A simple or elaborate metal (usually silver) crucifix. Press a hidden button, and a serviceable blade leaps out, capable of doing +3 damage. Because the blade is so sheltered, it holds poison well.

Dagger Shoe

Iron Age, Jacket Slick

A spring-loaded dagger six inches long is hidden in the sole of the shoe. The dagger is released by twisting the heel of the shoe, a maneuver which can be performed discretely while wearing the shoe. The dagger does +3 damage and is frequently envenomed.

Master Blade

Iron Age, Trenchcoat

A blade (usually a sword) forged by one of the greatest weapon smiths of all time: it will do +1 damage. Such an item attracts attention and admiration from all who recognise it for what it is. It often has a kind of destiny; strange and wondrous things can happen in it's vicinity.

Money Belt

Iron Age, Jacket Slick

A most unusual money belt developed for those whose security needs are more stringent than average, this article is constructed from high quality leather, with a large (usually U-shaped) buckle with a single spike. Twisting the spike for a few turns reveals an extremely sharp blade concealed within the spike sheath. This blade is used to force open a hairline crack in the buckle. Within the buckle is a handle for the blade. Using this tool, the agent measures off two-inch segments of the belt, starting at the buckle. Each two-inch segment contains from 150 to 300 Pounds sterling in a different currency. By cutting through the stitching, the agent can gain access to emergency currency for upwards of a dozen nations.

Ninja Ladder

Iron Age, Jacket

The Ninja had a vast assortment of rope ladders, in many shapes and sizes. The Gadget folds into an incredibly small bundle. They are generally equipped with small, strong hooks at the top, for anchorage. A ladder will safely hold the weight of 3 men at a time.

Ninja Scabbard (Saya)

Iron Age, Trenchcoat

The Saya has many functions besides holding the Ninjato. This Gadget is equipped with a removable tip, so that it can be turned into a hollow tube, when the sword is removed. It may be used in the following ways:

Climbing: The scabbarded weapon forms a small stepladder. The outsize tsuba of the Ninja-to acts to support the Ninja's foot.

Probe: Partially drawing the Ninjato, bracing the sword and scabbard together with the"sageo"(scabbard cord) forms a probe pole some 2 meters long. This may be used to test footing, rap on walls, etc. The Ninja in this situation can immediately release the scabbard, letting it fall on the ground.

Blowgun: Removing the tip of the Saya allows it to be used as a 2 Length Blowgun.

Voice Trumpet: The Ninja speaks through the Saya, using a form of ventriloquism. He may cause his voice to"speak"from any point within 10 meters of his location. He can disguise it's quality, but his volume cannot exceed a human shout. Use Deceit for this trick.

Powder Scatter: The tip of the Saya may be loaded with some powdered Poison or Drug. An Iaijutsu attack with the sword from such a prepared scabbard may throw the powder onto the target, even if the blow with the sword misses, make a separate attack roll for the powder. See Blinding Egg for effects.

Sword Cane

Iron Age, Trenchcoat Slick

A sword hidden inside a walking stick. The stick itself is a light club (+2 damage) but will become a lethal sword when unsheathed, striking for the normal +4 damage.

This is mainly a way to smuggle a blade where they are not allowed, but also a way for a gentleman to be prepared without sacrificing style.

Water Feet (Mizugumo)

Iron Age, Trenchcoat

The Mizugumo (literally,"water spider") are outsize pontoons worn on the feet, permitting the Ninja to walk on water. He uses his normal move, but cannot run and must do nothing else while moving. If he falls, it requires a stunt to right himself again. He also suffers two points of impairment. If worn on land, the same penalties apply. Taking them on or removing them is an 3-shot action.
