The vampire clans were changed between VtM and VtR. These are the VtM clans, and are provided mostly for completeness and reference. See clan for the VtR clans.

Vampire clans are lineages of the vampires that call themselves the kindred, the children of Caine. Each clan claims to trace its blood to Caine, through the generations. If he still exists, Caine would be the first generation. There were three of the second, all of whom were destroyed long ago.

Each member of the third generation of the kindred founded a clan, most of which still exist today, several thousand years later. Through the blood, each member of a clan share powers and disadvantages.

From the renaissance onwards the clans are (mainly) divided into two sects. Brujah, Gangrel, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Toreador, Tremere, and Ventrue form the Camarilla. The remnants of the Lasombra, Tzimisce, and various malcontents from the Camarilla clans form the Sabbat.

Vampires that belong to a different sect than that of their clan are known as anti-tribu. Of these, a few have split enough to form new bloodlines, with different disciplines than the main clan.

In addition to the clans, there are also a fair number of bloodlines that are equivalent to clans, but have less illustrious founders.

Extinct Clans

The Salubri are diablerized and hunted by the Tremere from 1150 onwards. They are soon reduced to an extremely rare bloodline in Camarilla territory.

Cappadocians are diablerized and destroyed by the emerging clan Giovanni somewhen between the high medieval and the renaissance.

The Lasombra and Tzimisce antediluvians are destroyed without diablerie in the anarch wars, but the clans survive as part of the Sabbat.
