All these suggestions/rules notwithstanding, it is always better to write something that is imperfect, rather than not to write at all. See WabiSabi. In reverse, it is always better to refrain from changing or removing something if you are unsure.
Editing
Everything is editable, unless otherwise specified. Just remember:
- If you are going to add anything, do. The only thing you need to ask yourself is whether this is too much information. If it is, add it to another page and add a link to the first (not everyone, for example, would like a sixpage listing of all the major demons on the Demon page.
- If you are going to change or remove anything, ask yourself if you know more about the fact/word than the person who wrote the first text does. Thus, editing someone else's character is something you preferably do after permission, or if you see a spelling mistake.
- Do not change things just because you want to write them yourself. Unless the text is wrong, misspelled, gives the wrong impression, or have any other fault you can point out, there's really no need to change it, and it may look like you didn't think the first person was competent enough to write it. By the same reasoning it is courteous to leave as much of the original text as is possible when you edit.
- If you describe a text as "non-editable" - like a letter or diary by a character - name it to reflect that fact. Call it "!LetterByZharathustriel" or something like that. If the letter in question is about Zarathustriel's demon research, do not put it directly under "Demon" (unless it's very short) - link it from the demon page. All the major info pages need to be editable by others.
- If there's something you are unsure of, either ask the person who wrote it, check with PanzerMan, or write a question/footnote at the end of the text and voice your opinion. Sign the question.
- If your edit isn't a "minor change" (see the checkbox "This is a minor change"), please write a short summary. This makes the page RecentChanges readable.
- If the edit is a minor change, like fixing links or spelling/grammar errors, please check the "minor change" checkbox. If you do, RecentChanges will not be cluttered with a lot of unimportant edits.
- When editing, use preview first and reread the text before you save.
- It's possible to check older versions, if you think something has disappeared. Try the "diff" or "
" links at the bottom of each page or ask StarFox.
- This text, too, is editable. If you don't agree, write.
Linking
- When linking, remember to check spelling. A misspelled word won't link to the right page. If the word does not turn up in color when you load the page, the link failed.
- If possible, without changing spelling too much, use WikiWords. Otherwise use square brackets.
- Try to begin link names with a capital letter. Remember that the name of the link becomes the name and header of a new page.
- Try to link at least once from every page to each new concept/character with a page of its own. So the first time you mention a demon on your page, make a link to the Demon page. That's the point of a Wiki, after all. There's always a point in linking the names of player characters, even if they appear more than once in a text, since they are important.
- To link every instance of "demon" in a long text, on the other hand, would be very repetitive, and half the text would turn purple. Think about this before you link. Then do what you think looks best - or as much as your energy permits.
