A more western-flavored version of the shugenja, the maven is a student of how to use arcane and religious lore together. A maven has a spellbook and records spells in that instead of consorting with spirits.

Class Features

This archetype has all normal class features, except as noted.

Maven Spellbook

Mavens posses the capacity to cast a number of book spells each day equal to the number of cleric spells he can cast. Book spells are picked form the sorcerer/wizard spell lists. A maven does not cast druid spells and druid spells are not on the maven's spell list.

The maven has a spellbook, just like a wizard. A level one maven starts with all of the standard level zero spells (cantrips) and three level one spells. In addition he has a number of level one spells equal to his Intelligence modifier from personal research and excellence as a student. If the maven has a negative Intelligence modifier, he does not receive fewer spells. Each level the maven advances, he learns two new spells for free, representing his magical study. Any additional spells must be scribed in the same manner a wizard does.

When an maven prepares spells, he selects which book spells to use for that day up to the limit of his "known spells" class feature. This is in addition to the selection of personal spells. An maven can change the exact book spells in his mind from day to day.

There are some possible complications to this:

  • Mavens can learn and use the Spell mastery feat, just like a wizard can. Like a wizard, an maven can prepare read magic from memory alone.
  • It is possible to have to few spells in your spellbook of a certain level to prepare the full number of spells known for that level. Keep this in mind when adding new spells to the spellbook. Such spells known capacity can still be used for spells of a lower level with our without metamagic enhancement.

This replaces the Spirit Spells ability.
