Thriae Sport (Apath)
Unofficial rules compendium | |
|
- This is a work in progress.
The Thriae are a race of all female bee-like monstrous humanoids, living in a highly complex hive society divided into castes with specialized abilities: thriae are self-sufficient in most ways, but need male humanoids for propagation. Combined with the need to co-exist with their neighbours, this has created the need for a thriae caste that are adapted to explore the world rather than maintaining the hive. This is the sport caste.
From the viewpoint of the hive, each sport is an experiment. Raised in the hive, but set free on maturity, sports are allowed to make their own way in the world and to forge their own ties. They are certainly expected to report back to the thriae hive, and to form alliances and provide intelligence to the hive, but this is not enforced. With no idea what the sports will encounter out there, the Thriae decided to give them complete freedom. This freedom comes at a price; merope, the magical honey Thriae produce. Thriae sports are denied merope once they leave the hive, both to conserve resources and to keep the secret of merope.
Description
Thriae sports are made to explore the world, and to be as flexible as the hive can conceive. Still, the hive is a very lawful structure, and what the hive can conceive of is pretty limited; sports are made to imitate whatever humanoids the hive has encountered.
Physical Description Thriae are insectile humanoids with humanoid head, arms, and legs and bee-like abdomen, wings, and eyes. All female, their humanoid body mimics the female form, but with a greater variance; thriae sports can resemble any humanoid race or might have their own shape and colors that can be bee-like or just random.
Society Thriae sports live on the border between humanoid society and their hive home. Not fully a part of either, the scouts seek to explore both and the border between them. Unable to procreate and create their own society, they are free to explore all kinds of societies and relationships.
Relations Thriae sports drift from group to group, and their low numbers means they are treated as individuals rather than a coherent group. The reception a thriae sport gets depends on the hive's relation to the people around it, but a hive is only likely to create sports if they have a good relationship with the people around.
Alignment and Religion Deliberately designed to be explorers, scouts are open to all sorts of ideas and religions. Thriae scouts see religion as another aspect of the world to explore, but are much more likely to be oracles exploring questions of faith than clerics serving a religion.
Adventurers Scouts leave the hive without many skills but the ability to learn very quickly, imprinting on a path as opportunity presents itself. As wanderers, classes like ranger, rogue, and bard are common, but other thriae scouts explore spiritually and enter classes like oracle or witch. Learned classes like Cleric, Druid, Monk, and Wizard are harder but not impossible for thriae scouts to pursue.
Names In their own language thria have names of scents and colors perceptible only to insects and impossible to translate. The names thriae use outside the hive are given to them by outsiders. Typically, these are female names relating to appearance or some event or merely an association of the namer.
Female Names Alinza, Faunra, Iandoli, Kotri, Majet, Sandcloud, Yellow stripe.

Thriae Sports in Greyhawk
Thriae exist on the borders of civilization, mainly in dry and warm terrains. Lairing in dead trees or underground tunnels, thriae roam over a large area to collect honey. Few other creatures compete with them over this, so the conflicts thriae get into are more over status and in defense of their hive.
Race Trait Options
Thriae sport can choose among the following race traits.
