This miniature skeleton, wearing a big smile and fine clothing, seems more intent on having a good time than being dead and buried.
Calacas are faeries of death. Whether they are related to actual dead people or just morbid is questionable. They frequent burial grounds, ruins and other remnants of life, but they also appear among the living, especially to children. They are cheerful and try to bring solace to the bereaved, but they can also be careless and cruel.
A claca appears as a miniature skeleton, or less commonly as an animated skull or other small object. They frequently carry a candle or glow strangely from within. About a foot tall and of thin construction, a calaca weights only a few ounces.
Combat
Calacas cannot make effective physical attacks, preferring to turn invisible and use their supernatural abilities to confound foes. They are not afraid of anything, and if provoked they can face down a much larger opponent.
Alternate form (Su)
A calaca has the ability to change its appearance once per day. This is limited to forms common to calacas, which includes the shape of tiny animated objects. It always has a distinctly morbid cast to its appearance. The abilites of the calaca does not change, but neither is this an illusion.
Spell-Like Abilities
A calaca can use the following spell-like abilities at will: chill touch (DC 13), dancing lights, detect magic, faerie fire, greater invisibility (self only), light, mage hand, and see invisibility. A calaca can use hideous laughter, spectral hand, ray of exhaustion (DC 15), dispel magic, and speak with dead once per day each. It uses these spell-like abilities as a level 5 sorcerer, save DCs are Charisma-based.
Skills
Calacas can use their Dexterity bonus instead of their Strength bonus on Climb, Jump and Swim checks.
Calacas as Familiars
A character with the Improved Familiar feat of at least 7th level and compatible alignment can gain a Calaca as a familiar.
