The tome witch studies magic in a more conventional way than most witches, using a book.
Class Features
This archetype has all normal class features, except as noted.
Spell Preparation
The tome witch has a spellbook, just like a wizard. A level one tome witch starts with all of the standard level zero spells (cantrips) and three level one spells. In addition she has a number of level one spells equal to her Intelligence modifier from personal research and excellence as a student. If the witch has a negative Intelligence modifier, she does not receive fewer spells. Each level the witch advances, she learns two new spells for free, representing her magical study. Any additional spells must be scribed in the same manner a wizard does.
There are some possible complications to this:
- Any spells gained for free, such as the patron spells, are added to the spellbook instead of to the familiar's store of spells.
- A multiclass wizard/tome witch only needs to maintain one spellbook for both her classes. Any spell in this book can be prepared by either class, subject to normal spell list and spell slot limits.
- Tome witches can learn and use the Spell mastery feat, just like a wizard can. Like a wizard, a tome witch can prepare read magic from memory alone.
This is a modification to the spells ability.
Bonded Tome
A tome witch with her spellbook held in hand can use it once per day to cast any one spell from that spellbook she is capable of casting, even if the spell is not prepared. This spell is treated like any other spell cast by the tome witch, including casting time, duration, and other effects dependent on the tome witch's level. This spell cannot be modified by metamagic feats or other abilities.
This replaces the witch's familiar ability.
