=== Eidolon Ally ===
+
|+''' Native Eidolons '''
A monster mage begins play with the services of a powerful creature called an eidolon ally. This is a modification to the eidolon ability. The eidolon ally formed a pact with the monster mage for reasons that need not be entirely clear. An eidolon ally has an alignment selected by the player, it can be different from the monster mage's own alignment.
+

+
| valign="top" |
The eidolon ally is an native outsider. The eidolon ally’s physical appearance is up to the monster mage, but it always appears as some sort of fantastical creature. This control is not fine enough to make the eidolon ally appear like a specific creature.  The monster ally generally looks like a conventional monster, like a dragon or unicorn.
+
Many monster magi have a pact with a monster that is not extra-dimensional. This is represented by the monster ally archetype, which is commonly combined with monster magus.

+
|}
Unlike regular eidolons,  eidolon allies are native outsiders and are a permanent fixture of this world. They are not extra-dimensional and cannot be summoned or dismissed.

Eidolon allies are very hard to kill; they go unconscious normally at zero hit points, but automatically stabilize and can survive at negative hit points equal to their full normal hit points. An eidolon ally that is slain can be raised or resurrected without suffering negative levels, or the monster mage can call upon his pact to contact a new eidolon ally. This is a one-hour ritual that severs all ties with the old monster. The replacement eidolon ally must travel to the monster mage using its own abilities, a process that can take up to a week.
+
=== Weapon and Armor Proficiency ===
 +
A monster magus is proficient with all simple and martial weapons. A monster magus is also proficient with light armor. He can cast monster magus spells while wearing light armor without incurring the normal arcane spell failure chance. Like any other arcane spellcaster, a monster magus wearing medium armor, heavy armor, or a shield incurs a chance of arcane spell failure if the spell in question has a somatic component. A multiclass monster magus still incurs the normal arcane spell failure chance for arcane spells received from other classes.

The eidolon ally’s Hit Dice, saving throws, skills, feats, and abilities are tied to the monster mage’s class level and increase as the monster mage gains levels. In addition, each eidolon ally receives a pool of evolution points, based on the monster mage’s class level, that can be used to give the eidolon ally different abilities and powers. Whenever the monster mage gains a level, he must decide how these points are spent, and they are set until he gains another level of monster mage. These attributes are the same as those of a regular eidolon.
+
=== Spells ===
 +
A monster magus casts and learns spells as a summoner, using the magus spell list.

Eidolon allies have access to some new and modified evolutions.
+
=== Strong Fortitude Save ===
 +
Like a magus, the monster magus has fortitude saves in the good category.

==== Large (Ex) ====
+
=== Deliver Touch Spells (Su) ===
''2 point evolution''
+
The monster magus' eidolon can deliver touch spells for the monster magus. If the monster magus and the eidolon are in contact at the time the monster magus casts a touch spell, he can designate his eidolon as the “toucher.” The eidolon can then deliver the touch spell just as the master would, including using spellstrike at level 3. The monster magus and eidolon can each hold the charge of a separate touch spell, and the monster magus can cast a spell for his eidolon to hold while he is himself holding the charge of a spell. This replaces summon monster I.

The large evolution is only a two-point evolution for an eidolon ally, and the huge evolution an additional 3 points instead of 6 points. The benefits of being Large or Huge remain the same, and eidolon allies with this evolution still pay twice the normal cost for evolutions to Strength and Constitution.
+
=== Spellstrike (Su)===
 +
Gained at 3rd level, this is the same as the magus ability of the same name. This replaces summon monster II.

By paying the full normal cost of the Large or Huge evolutions, the eidolon ally gains the ability to grow selectively, and can return to Small or Medium size or grow to its full possible size as a standard action.
+
=== Bonus Feats ===
 +
At 5th level, and every six levels thereafter, a monster magus gains a bonus feat in addition to those gained from normal advancement. These bonus feats must be selected from those listed as combat or metamagic feats. He must meet the prerequisites for these feats as normal. This replaces summon monster III, VI, and IX.

==== Shrink (Su) ====
+
=== Medium Armor (Ex) ===
''4 point evolution''
+
Gained at 7th level, this is the same as the magus ability of the same name. This replaces summon monster IV.

An eidolon ally can shrink to Tiny size or  resume its normal size as a standard action. A Tiny eidolon ally is often mistaken for a familiar.
+
=== Fighter Training (Ex) ===
 +
Gained at 9th level, this is the same as the magus ability of the same name. This replaces summon monster V.

While Tiny, the eidolon ally gains a +4 bonus to its Dexterity score. It also takes a –8 penalty to its Strength and a –4 penalty to its Constitution. It gains a +2 size bonus to its AC and attack rolls, a –2 penalty to its CMB and CMD scores, a +4 bonus on its Fly skill checks, and a +8 bonus on its Stealth skill checks. If it is normally Small, Large, or Huge, it loses the effects of these size modifications. Any natural armor the eidolon ally has is halved. It also loses its natural reach and all natural and weapon attacks do two steps less damage.
+
=== Heavy Armor (Ex) ===
 +
Gained at 13th level, this is the same as the magus ability of the same name. This replaces summon monster VII.

=== Summon Monster (Sp) ===
+
=== Counterstrike (Ex) ===
This is the same as the summoner ability of the same name, except the monster mage can use it while his eidolon is around. He can still only have one instance of the summon monster ability active at any one time; using this ability dismisses any monsters remaining from a previous use of the ability. This is a modification of summon monster and also replaces life link.
+
Gained at 15th level, this is the same as the magus ability of the same name. This replaces summon monster VIII.

=== Aspect (Su) ===
+
=== Greater Spell Access (Su) ===
This is the same as the summoner ability of the same name, except it is gained at 8th level.
+
Gained at 19th level, this is the same as the magus ability of the same name.
 +
These spells are added to the monster magus' spell list and list of known spells.
 +
This replaces gate.

=== Greater  Call (Su) ===
+
== Table: Monster Magus ==
At 10th level, the monster mage can ''teleport'' his eidolon ally to his side once per week. This works like maker's call, except the range is that of ''teleport''. The caster level of this ability is the monster mage's level +5 and the spell level of this ability is half the monster mage's level. This replaces transposition.

A mage with offensive spells and an eidolon.

Background

Much as sorcerers gain their power trough a monstrous heritage, a monster magus gains his magic from a bond with a supernatural creature—only the monster magus' creature is an actual, physical ally! This bond can be a matter of heritage, obligation, or personal fondness.

Class Information

This is a summoner archetypes with some of the traits of the magus.

Publisher: Everyman Gaming.

Hit Die: d8.

Class Features

The monster magus has all the summoner's class features, except as described here.

Native Eidolons

Many monster magi have a pact with a monster that is not extra-dimensional. This is represented by the monster ally archetype, which is commonly combined with monster magus.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency

A monster magus is proficient with all simple and martial weapons. A monster magus is also proficient with light armor. He can cast monster magus spells while wearing light armor without incurring the normal arcane spell failure chance. Like any other arcane spellcaster, a monster magus wearing medium armor, heavy armor, or a shield incurs a chance of arcane spell failure if the spell in question has a somatic component. A multiclass monster magus still incurs the normal arcane spell failure chance for arcane spells received from other classes.

Spells

A monster magus casts and learns spells as a summoner, using the magus spell list.

Strong Fortitude Save

Like a magus, the monster magus has fortitude saves in the good category.

Deliver Touch Spells (Su)

The monster magus' eidolon can deliver touch spells for the monster magus. If the monster magus and the eidolon are in contact at the time the monster magus casts a touch spell, he can designate his eidolon as the “toucher.” The eidolon can then deliver the touch spell just as the master would, including using spellstrike at level 3. The monster magus and eidolon can each hold the charge of a separate touch spell, and the monster magus can cast a spell for his eidolon to hold while he is himself holding the charge of a spell. This replaces summon monster I.

Spellstrike (Su)

Gained at 3rd level, this is the same as the magus ability of the same name. This replaces summon monster II.

Bonus Feats

At 5th level, and every six levels thereafter, a monster magus gains a bonus feat in addition to those gained from normal advancement. These bonus feats must be selected from those listed as combat or metamagic feats. He must meet the prerequisites for these feats as normal. This replaces summon monster III, VI, and IX.

Medium Armor (Ex)

Gained at 7th level, this is the same as the magus ability of the same name. This replaces summon monster IV.

Fighter Training (Ex)

Gained at 9th level, this is the same as the magus ability of the same name. This replaces summon monster V.

Heavy Armor (Ex)

Gained at 13th level, this is the same as the magus ability of the same name. This replaces summon monster VII.

Counterstrike (Ex)

Gained at 15th level, this is the same as the magus ability of the same name. This replaces summon monster VIII.

Greater Spell Access (Su)

Gained at 19th level, this is the same as the magus ability of the same name. These spells are added to the monster magus' spell list and list of known spells. This replaces gate.
