Background

A brilliant man, but not a member of the first Miscatonic University Antarctic expedition. He saw how badly his friends were changed by their experiences, and decided the world had to know what happened.

He was shot in the leg by Danforth, and could not make any contribution to the expedition after that point.

He had his worst fears confirmed on the ice, and does not really want to talk about his experiences afterwards.
