My Revised Ranger

The feats of the ranger class are somewhat confused. At first level, rangers gain three specific feats and then no more. This is an attempt to make it a beneficial option to advance several levels in the Ranger class and not give out all of the feats at first level. In addition, it is a bit silly that all rangers are two-weapon specialists; this seems an unusual ranger archetype to me. A more typical ranger would use a spear or bow. Do I smell a Drizzt Do'Urden lurking in the bushes?

Revised Ranger

  • Track feat at first level (only).
  • Six skill points each level.
  • The bonus versus favored enemies is the same for all the categories, and is equal to the current number of favored enemies. A ranger with five favored enemies get a +5 bonus against each of them.
  • Pathfinding (ex). This is a new Ranger ability, that lets you ignore terrain penalties and other dangers while moving overland. For each level of experience as a ranger, you may choose one favored terrain. You may only use the Pathfinding ability in favored terrain. Terrain types include (but are not limited to): caverns, dungeons, forest, hills, jungle, mountains, other-planar terrain (specific to each plane), plains, rough, sandy desert, scrub, swamp, underwater, urban, water (boating).
    • At first level, you can move trough favored terrain as though moving on a highway (see overland Movement in the SRD).
    • At level four, you can use your Wilderness Lore skill to avoid random encounters by using backways and byways or by setting up camp in remote locations. If successful, you choose a path with no hostile encounters. This requires opposed Wilderness Lore skill against the best skill in each potential encounter, and you suffer a penalty of -1 for each other creature moving along with you.
    • At level eight, you can lead a small party (no more than one other creature/level), and you may all move through any type of terrain as though moving on a highway.
    • At level twelve, you can lead a small army (no more than 50 creatures times your level) as if moving on a road.
    • At level sixteen, you can lead a small party (no more than one other creature/level) and move overland through any favored terrain at double the normal rate.
