Holy Slayer Prestige Class

Holy slayers are religious assassins in oriental societies. Filled with utter devotion and zeal, they seek out and say those who oppose the religion or mislead the faithful. Living under covers as ordinary members of the faithful, holy slayers are ever-ready to come and strike at the call of their brotherhood.

Holy slayers see themselves as the epitome of righteousness. The devotion and loyalty demanded of the profession means that all holy slayers cannot be chaotic. A holy slayer that becomes chaotic cannot advance further in the class. If found out, he will be sought out and killed by his fellows.

Holy slayers are organized in brotherhoods. Each brotherhood has its own internal ranks, and is almost always ruled by a solitary figure, the grandfather or grandmother of the brotherhood. Each brotherhood serves a particular church, but may sometimes be at odds with the official doctrines of that church. In such cases, the church may find itself the victim of it's own holy slayers. Each brotherhood also has a favored weapon, used by preference in all holy slayings. This is always a melee weapon of medium size or smaller. The DM can provide brotherhoods for his campaign, or let the player of a holy slayer character design a brotherhood for his approval, along with the church served, specific goals and a holy weapon.

To a holy slayer, sin and corruption is like a cancer in the body of society, to be cut out by the surgeons knife of the brotherhood. And if an slaying can be used to show the populace the error of a corrupt way of life, so much the better. The ideal holy slaying is a public event involving a corrupt ruler or high official. When the target is in a public place, such as a procession, making a speech from a balcony or otherwise accessible and seen by many, the slayers strike, dressed in white to show their purity, and to show off the blood. Appearing suddenly from concealment or from out of the crowd, they kill the target while proclaiming their holy mission and the target's sins. Evil slayers often kill random bystanders vantonly, while good holy slayers may attack as a warning or martyr themselves deliberately to provide a warning to the faithful.

Naturally, not all holy slayings are such ideal events. Much of what the holy slayers do is undercover spy work, clandestine assassination, recruiting agents and hiding from authorities. Many holy slayers never actually draw their sacred weapons in anger. Far from all who are associated with a holy slayer brotherhood take up this prestige class, many are initiated through the Vision of Paradise ability but remain with their usual classes, never learning the deeper secrets of the brotherhood.

Holy slayers must always have a cover in normal society, and what better cover than levels in an innocent class? Most holy slayers were rogues or fighters prior to becoming slayers. Many were uncomfortable and unsuccessful in their previous roles, and underwent a significant life crisis before joining the slayers. Others were brought up to be slayers, but still had to learn the prerequisite skills and get a proper cover before being taught the inner secrets of the brotherhood. Even those who advance to join the holy slayer prestige class must still maintain their cover in ordinary society and continue to advance in their regular class.

Hit Die: d6

Requirements

To qualify as a holy slayer, the character must fulfill all the following criteria.

Alignment: Not chaotic (lg, ln, le, ng, n, ne)

Knowledge (religion): 2 ranks.

Base Attack Bonus: +5 or Sneak Attack +3d6

Feats: Iron Will.

Fanatical devotion to the cause and patron deity.
Having been selected by the elders of the fellowship.

Special Level Limitations:

As a holy slayer, you must keep up your cover and advance in levels in your other classes. You must have a character level equal to or greater than three times the class level you wish to advance to as a holy slayer. To become a third-level holy slayer, your character level must be nine or more.

Skill Points at Each Level: 8 + Int modifier.

Class Skills: Balance (Dex), Bluff (Cha), Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Disable Device (Int), Disguise (Cha), Escape Artist (Dex) , Forgery (Int), Gather Information (Cha), Handle Animal (Cha), Hide (Dex), Innuendo (Wis), Intimidate (Cha), Intuit Direction (Wis), Jump (Str), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Wis), Open Lock (Dex), Profession (Wis), Ride (Dex), Search (Int), Sense Motive (Wis), Spot (Wis), Swim (Str), Tumble (Dex), Use Magic Device (Cha, restricted skill).

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Holy Slayers are proficient with all simple and martial melee weapons, but not with missile weapons, armor or shields. They are also proficient with the holy weapon of their order; in some cases, this is an exotic weapon.

Sneak Attack (ex): This is the same as the rogue's sneak attack, PH p. 47. If the holy slayer has any previous sneak attack bonus from another class, these bonuses stack.

Conceal Weapon (ex): The holy slayer gains an exceptional ability to conceal weapons. Any light weapon or one-handed weapon (PH, p 97) can be concealed under the holy slayer's clothes. It takes a spot roll with a DC of 20 + the holy slayer's disguise skill to spot such a weapon. The weapon can still be drawn as normal.

Rush attack (ex): A holy slayer may take a full action on a surprise round; he is not restricted to a partial action.

Taqiyya (ex): Doctrine of caution. Under compulsion, a believer may be exempted from fulfilling obligations of religion. Used to justify concealing beliefs that others object to. In the holy slayer's case, this is the ability to shut off your persona as a holy slayer, never thinking of it or acting upon it except when on a mission. It is impossible to read the slayer's mind concerning his holy slayer activities or to detect his class in any way. If the slayer is in deep cover as a person of another alignment, this effectively becomes his alignment while under cover; his true alignment and loyalty is buried in the subconscious. It also grants a +10 morale bonus to the disguise and bluff skills to maintain a cover. This is an extraordinary ability.

Virgin Weapon (sp): Each holy slayer brotherhood has a special holy weapon, and this supernatural ability is used by a holy slayer to enchant such a weapon before a mission. He need not use it himself; this ability is often the hallmark of a high-level operative that plans the operations conducted by lower-level holy slayers.

The holy slayer must have decided upon a target and spend a full night meditating upon the target and the sins he has committed, to be made a target of the wrath of the faithful. The weapon must never have been used before. This enchants the weapons that holy slayers commonly leave at a murder scene, to make it a more effective weapon and impossible to trace. The bless has the effect of the keen edge and greater magic weapon spells cast at your character level. A virgin weapon may only be used on the mission against the intended target. Incidental uses during the mission are allowed, but unrelated use destroys the blessing, and it ends after one month in any case.

The weapon is also forever shielded against divination. Anyone using divination on the blade will only learn the name of the brotherhood that made the weapon and the sins the victim had perpetuated in the mind of the creator of the weapon. A Virgin Weapon will not register on detect magic. The blessing can be dispelled, but the protection against divination lasts forever.

Vision of Paradise (ex): The holy slayer can enact the ritual of indoctrination (described in the introduction to the class) to give someone the impression that he has been in heaven and could return at the will of the holy slayer.

The Vision of Paradise can be used to indoctrinate an unwilling subject. This requires the holy slayer to abduct his victim; during a week-long ritual, the target is then either drugged or actually given a vision of paradise (opinions and methods differ). After this week is done, the target will be convinced of his experience in heaven and willing to do anything to experience it again.

It works like a charm monster spell with extended duration. Each week, the victim is allowed a Will Saving throw to resist the effects, with a DC of 15 + the holy slayer's charisma modifier. Until this save is made, the victim is unable to give away any secrets he has been entrusted with.

This ritual is also performed on willing recruits, initiating them into the holy slayers. When used this way, it will in all probability last the rest of their lives. Such a subject will never reveal the secrets of the order, even if charmed or intimidated. This works even on low-level recruits who are not themselves of the holy slayer class. If such a subject gets second thoughts about being a holy slayer, the indoctrination effect kicks in, and keeps them loyal for a while longer (until they pass their saving throw).

Despite the possibility that it involves an actual vision of paradise, this is an extraordinary ability, and thus not detectable as magical and impossible to dispel.
