Alchemist Class


Alchemists are spellcasters who do not actually use spells in the ordinary sense. Rather, they prepare concotions (just as a regular spellcaster prepares spells) and uses these alchemical substaces to create magical effects. Alchemists thus work their magic through powders, explosions and sleight-of-hand.

Alchemists tend to be less intimidating to others than true wizards. Regular folk consider them eccentric and mysterious, and might not invite them over for dinner or be happy about one marring into the family. But the 'scientific' approach of an alchemist makes him much less feared than a true mage.

Gnomes make particularily fine alchemists because of their keen sense of smell, but all races have their fair share. Half-orcs rarely have the intelligence to become alchemists.

  • Saving Throws : Fortitude (Good), Reflex (Poor), Will (Poor)
  • Skill Points at Each Level: 2 + Int modifier.
  • Class Skills: Alchemy (Int), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Knowledge (all skills, taken individually) (Int), Profession (Wis), Scry (Int, restricted skill), Spellcraft (Int).

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Alchemists are proficient with the club, dagger, heavy crossbow, light crossbow, and quarterstaff but not with armor or shields. Note that the standard armor check penatlies to skills apply. Like any other arcane spellcaster, an alchemist can cast spells while wearing armor or using a shield but suffers a chance of arcane spell failure if the spell in question has a somatic component (most do).

Spells: Alchemists calculate their maximum number of arcane spells per day as wizards of equal level, including intelligence bonuses. These spells are actually alchemical concotions, as explained above. This means that they lack verbal components, but always have material components. An alchemist cannot prepare his spells unless he has access to an alchemist's kit. Alchemists have their own spell lists, below.

Familiar: An alchemist can summon a familiar in exactly the same manner as a sorceror. See PH, p 51.

Brew Potion: At 3 rd level, an alchemist learns the Brew Potion feat.

Bonus Feats: Just like wizards, Alchemists gain bonus feats from the metamagical or item creation feats.
