Not all rangers are friends with animals; some have intelligenc companions instead.

Animal Companion: The Merry Men ranger lacks an animal companion.

Leadership: The Merry Men ranger gets the Leadership feat as a bonus feat at level 6, along with a +2 bonus on Leadership score. Followers do not generally follow the ranger around. Instead they live civilian lives, but report to the ranger anything they hear, can provide safe houses, hide contraband etc. Assume all followers to be constantly on the lookout for news and gossip, using their Gather Information skill. If you have a follower in a suitable position, reduce the DC of all Gather Information checks by 5 for both you and that follower.
