Class Features

The following are new or modified bard class features.

Eschew Material Components

All bards who are spontaneous spellcasters gain this feat as a bonus feat at first level. Archetypes that change the bard's spellcasting to stop being a spontaneous caster does not gain it.

Versatile Performance Reverse List

This is a reversed list of versatile performance, indicating which regular skills you can substitute for with what performance skills. This is not a rules change, merely a convenient table to use.

  • Acrobatics (Dance)

  • Diplomacy (Keyboard Instruments, Oratory, String Instruments, Wind Instruments, Act)
  • Disguise (Act)
  • Fly (Dance)
  • Handle Animal (Percussion Instruments, Wind Instruments)
  • Intimidate (Comedy, Keyboard Instruments, Percussion Instruments)
  • Sense Motive (Oratory, Sing)

Two performance sets to cover all areas of versatile performance except Disguise and Handle Animal:

  • Dance (Acrobatics, Fly)
  • Keyboard Instruments (Diplomacy, Intimidate)
  • Sing (Bluff, Sense Motive)
  • Dance (Acrobatics, Fly)
  • Comedy (Bluff, Intimidate)
  • Oratory (Diplomacy, Sense Motive)

Bard Feats

The following new or modified feats are applicable to bards.

Improvised Instrument (General)

You can use most objects as musical instruments.

Benefit: You can use any object of hardness 5 or more as a percussion instrument. You can use a bow or sling as a sting instrument. You can have any shafted or bladed object modified into a wind instrument at a cost of 10 gp. Such an instrument is only usable by someone with this feat. If the object you are using as an instrument has an enchantment bonus of +1 or more, it counts as a masterwork musical instrument when you use it. When you use bard or virtuoso abilities that require somatic or visual components, a hand holding an improvised instrument is considered a free hand.

Perform Voice (General)

You can use a single voice as if it was a performance.

Benefit: You learn a single voice from a virtuoso theme as a bardic performance. You count as a lesser theme virtuoso of your level in the class that grants bardic performance for the purpose of qualifying for voices. You use this voice as if it was a bardic performance. This means you cannot use the voice in the same round you use another bardic performance.

Special: You can learn Voice Performance multiple times, each time selecting a new voice.

Vocalized Instrument (General)

You can vocalize to imitate musical instruments.

Benefit: You can emulate musical instruments using your voice. This allows you to use Perform (sing) as if it was Perform (keyboard, percussion, string, wind) without having a musical instrument. If you are using bard or virtuoso spells or abilities you can replace somatic components with verbal components.

Special: You cannot use Perform (sing) as Perform (keyboard, percussion, string, wind) with the bard's versatile performance ability.

Bard Spell List Additions

Used by the bard to level 6 and the skald to level 6.

Level 0 alter race, attract attention, benign dispel, blind spot, color cantip, hideous laughter, honeyed words, merciful insight, mutual attraction, neglect, purge evidence (lesser), summon zero, unseen musician.

Level 1 armor, cure light wounds, fireflies, sense sein, shadow fighting, shadow wounds, taunt.

Level 2 ancestral advice, dimension door (lesser), fey gold, forget, glitterdust, mirror image, repulsiveness, riddle resolver, shadow armaments, shadow fighting (mass), stupefy.

Level 3 forget (mass), purge evidence, spectral wounds, scapegoat.

Level 4 shadow shape, stun spell, singing sword curse, transfer enchantment.

Level 5 devil contract.

Level 6 shadow shape (greater), shadow heal/harm.

Table: Bard

The bard table in the SRD is missing the later entries for the jack of all trades ability. These are included in this table. The only addition is eschew material components.
